Life is grand: Stop the page flipping madness

Why does it have to be a defined set of pages? Why can't the home screen be one large (for lack of a better word) graphic essentially that you can drag around in ANY direction as if you were zoomed in on a photo? And also zoom in or out as if it were a photo by pinching to zoom out or spreading to zoom in. This would also allow for icon placement in any position, you could essentially create a shape with your icons, a star for example, putting most used apps at the center (where the home screen would default to at full zoom) and least used at the points of the star. I like my idea better than these two solutions.

Sounds like an interesting idea, Tom. I'd be worried it involves a bit too much dragging about though. Part of the benefit of the "paging" idea is that pages have inertia and snap between flips. You just have to give a little swipe to the left or right and it flips to the next page, showing a bunch of new icons. If your idea has enough inertia then it may work well.

Also your idea could be functional at any zoom level. Those with small fingers could stay zoomed out and still load apps, showing many more icons at once.

This is a very good idea. For those of us that are running custom firmwares on our phones we have a program called Categories. It allows you to create "folders" that you can customize to hold different categories of apps ie a Games icon when touched opens up a page that holds all of your game icons, web folder that holds all of your web clips, a utilities folder that holds all of your utility apps...etc etc. So even if you have 160 apps you don't have themfilling up pages.

This idea would be very cool and tremendously sought after if it can be achieved.

Thanks AlbinoRhino, I'll check Categories out.
