Life is grand: On buying WinZip

  • Steve Castle · 3 years ago
    People still use WinZip?

I remember the old days of Windows 95 and Winzip when it wasn't natively supported. But since then, I've made the transition to Winrar and then eventually to Linux. :-O

It is still the best zip tool on Windows. I've tried WinRAR and didn't like it much, same with 7Zip and IZarc.

Also my purchase was a lot to do with paying for 10 years of use. Even if from today I never use WinZip again I'll be happy to have bought it.

Bleh. WinZip sucks. 7zip is where it's at. Even if you never use the archive browser, the shell integration is so powerful it's ridiculous. And fast too...freaking fast.

I can't stand 7Zip. It borks up far too often.

Also, and you guys are great at missing the point :P, I am just glad I finally paid for 10 years of reliable usage.

Wow! A software engineer who believes in paying for software. A rare find. I agree if you're getting value from a tool or have been, then it's only right to cough up the dough. Someone has to pay all those developer's salaries. If only more people has the same attiture then maybe some other more popular useful tools would be more affordable to josie suds.I mean how can folk who initiate product development from an initial idea afford to go back and make it better, once its in the domain, if no one pays for it.

I bought Winzip years ago with the promise that I got free upgrades for life. Apparently these stopped with version 9.0 and now Winzip won't even answer my E-mails to resend my registration code after I lost it in a hard drive crash. You used to be able to get Winzip for under $20, but since Correl took them over it's all about the profit. Long time users have gotten screwed as new pro versions sell for $50!! That's a lot of bucks for a piece of software that has so limited use.
