It's been possible since day 1, thanks to the Ning Content Store, which makes it just as easy to query data across the whole of Ning as it does in a single Ning app. This, in combination with cloning, opens up whole new app design patterns which we've only just begun to explore. Nat's article, while excellent, skips over some of our other cool features such as the REST API which allows other apps to use us as a remote data store that's queryable like a database and spits out Atom feeds.

I'm one of Ning's developer advocates, and I'd be very interested to see what you have in mind for building on Ning. If you want to chat or have questions, give me a yell: yoz(at)ning.com.
